In 2004, the European Community issued a directive on the limitation of emissions of Volatile Organic Compounds (VOCs) particularly for paints to be applied indoors.
Directive 2004/42/EC – Legislative Decree March 27, 2006, No. 161 on: Limitation of VOC emissions due to the use of organic solvents in certain paints and varnishes (2006).
The Ministry of Health defines the discomfort caused by VOCs as follows:
“VOCs can cause a wide range of effects that range from sensory discomfort to serious alterations in health status; at high concentrations in indoor environments, they can cause effects on numerous organs or systems, particularly affecting the central nervous system.”
Today there are low-VOC indoor paints available on the market.
(some say “zero VOC” but the scientific truth says it should be called “low VOC content”).
These paints (“low VOC content”) must be used in the indoor environments of a home or office because they do not release harmful agents to our health in the places where they have been applied.
